How to choose the right styling product: gel, wax or pomade?

Navigating through the vast selection of men's hair styling products can be quite overwhelming. Different products serve different purposes, suit different hair types, and deliver entirely different results. If you’ve been struggling with choosing the right product and can’t quite grasp the differences between them, you’re in the right place! Welcome to our guide that will help you understand the key differences between wax, pomade, and gel—and guide you to choosing the right one for your style.

Pomade: Shine and Slick

First up is the legendary pomade. Think about iconic hairstyles like Elvis Presley or Brad Pitt. Pomade gives you that smooth, shiny, and flexible look. In short, it’s great if you like to comb your hair to the side or slick it back without making it look greasy or unruly.

When choosing a pomade, it’s important to consider your hair type. If you have fine hair, opt for a lighter pomade to avoid weighing it down. If you have thick hair, go for a stronger option with more shine. Either way, pomade will give you a well-styled look that holds throughout the day.

Gel: When You Need a Strong Hold

Hair gels are perfect for men with shorter hair. Picture Ross from Friends or the spiky hairstyles of the ‘90s (think *NSYNC). If you prefer a strong hold with no stray hairs, or a sharp, edgy look, then gel is the product for you.

However, there’s a big "but" when it comes to using gel. The rule here is less is more. Apply too much and your hair will feel hard and dry. Long-term use of gel can also dry out your hair, so be sure to wash it out thoroughly at the end of the day.

Wax: For a Natural Look

We all have that one friend who spends at least half an hour in front of the mirror every morning, trying to perfect that “effortlessly messy” hairstyle. Chances are, they’re using wax!

Wax is perfect for short to medium-length hair and for those who prefer a more natural, matte finish. It gives hair a more understated look, as if you haven’t used any product at all (but we know you did!). A note of caution—if you have fine hair, wax might not be your best bet, as it can weigh your hair down.

How to Choose the Right Product for Your Hair Type

Now let’s sum up the basic guidelines for choosing the right styling product based on your hair type:

  1. Fine Hair

For fine hair, stick with lighter products that won’t weigh your hair down. Pomade is your best choice.

  2. Thick Hair

Thick hair can handle stronger products, as it’s tougher to tame. Go for wax or a strong-hold gel, but be careful not to overdo it. Use just the right amount.

  3. Curly Hair

Curly hair requires additional products to help with hydration and curl definition. As for styling products, opt for lighter waxes or gels.
